During an introduction lecture, the tutorial will show potentials from the perspectives of mechanical engineering, mechatronics, electrical engineering, civil engineering and economics, which result from additive manufacturing, and the effects this technology has on products. The following topics will be addressed:

  • Function integration
  • Topology optimization
  • Optimization of electronic components
  • Effects on business models

The participating students will first consolidate the contents of the introduction lecture by using provided materials and later in teams will apply it using the overarching example of a wind turbine. An existing CAD data set of a wind turbine will be used, on which an exercise is carried out for each of the addressed topics. Software such as Siemens NX or INSPIRE is used to support the modelling and simulation of individual areas of the wind turbine required to complete the exercises. The results of the exercises will then be printed using 3D printers, so that at the end of the tutorial each team has a functional wind turbine model on which the potentials of additive manufacturing can be demonstrated.

Grading

The tutorials grade consists of three different parts:

  • The execution of the exercises for the optimization of a wind turbine
  • Written report and documentation
  • Final presentation and colloquium
