Simulation of tribological systems
In rolling bearing research, it has long been known that the electrical impedance of rolling bearings is determined by the Hertzian surface, metallic contacts of roughness peaks and the central film thickness. To describe the latter, empirical formulas are usually used due to the low computational cost. These describe the elastohydrodynamic contact in the rolling bearing sufficiently accurately for certain applications, but are not generally applicable. A sufficient description of the elastohydrodynamic contact in the case of surface unevenness is therefore not possible with these formulas.
The research topic is thus to numerically represent this multiphysical system based on the open source simulation environment OpenFOAM and to qualitatively investigate the influence of both different phenomena and certain surface conditions.
